Syracuse closes out its preseason schedule with a convincing 37-point victory over Le Moyne Syracuse was once again forced to play without a point guard in its preseason finale against Le Moyne.
This time though, the offense ran much smoother than in the opener. Tyus Battle ran the show and dished out five assists while not turning the ball over a single time. Battle finished with 14 points and was one of four ‘Cuse players in double figures. Elijah Hughes led the way with 21 points in 28 minutes of action. Buddy Boeheim and Oshae Brissett dropped in 13 points and 14 points respectively, as the Orange rolled past the Dolphins 89-52.
Le Moyne jumped out to an early 9-2 lead thanks to three made three-pointers right off the bat. However, Syracuse settled down and outscored the Dolphins 48-21 the rest of the half to take a commanding 50-30 lead at intermission. As a team, SU shot better than 54% from the field and 47% from “3” on 9-for-19 shooting from behind the arc. Turnovers were an issue in the first half. Syracuse turned it over 10 times in the first 20 minutes, but just three times after the break. Le Moyne turned it over 26 times in the game.
Jim Boeheim said afterwards that he’s not sure of where things stand with the point guard position leading up to the regular season opener on Tuesday against Eastern Washington. Boeheim called it “likely a game-time decision” about who would be able to play. Jalen Carey is back at practice but sat out again. Frank Howard is working without a boot now, but no return date has been set. Howard Washington, meanwhile, is expected to be cleared for contact on Saturday.
