The SU men’s basketball team hits the Thanksgiving holiday a perfect 5-0 after taking care of Toledo Wednesday night inside the Dome 72-64.
Tyus Battle took a hard fall early in the second half appearing to injure his back with 15:44 to play. Battle tried to continue but was removed from the game a few minutes later by Jim Boeheim. In his absence, Frank Howard and Oshae Brissett stepped up their play. Both set a new personal career-high in points. Howard led all scorers with 25 points. The junior point guard also chipped in with six rebounds and four assists. As for Brissett, the freshman forward out of Canada finished with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Matthew Moyer was the only other SU player in double figures. Moyer went for 11 points in his best collegiate game so far.
Toledo trailed by only one point at the half and actually took the lead 35-33 with a three-pointer early in the second half. Syracuse, though, responded with an 11-0 run right after that to pull ahead for good. The Orange got it done down the stretch without Battle, who finished with only eight points. SU also finished the game without its two centers. Both Bourama Sidibe and Paschal Chukwu fouled out.
Jim Boeheim’s squad now has a few days off before hosting Maryland on Monday as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
