The WNY Flash returned to Buffalo with a trophy in tow and a welcome fit for champions.

Fans lined the lobby of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport to see their newly crowned soccer team.

The Flash won the NWSL title one day before in perhaps the most dramatic fashion imaginable. Seconds away from losing in the 124th minute, league MVP Lynn Williams headed home a cross from Jessica McDonald to tie the game 2-2. In the following penalty kicks, Flash goalie Sabrina D’Angelo stopped three shots as the Flash topped Washington 4-3.

“It played just as we probably thought it would. Late goal, penalties,” said Flash manager Paul Riley. “All the drama that we’ve had most of the season. I think we’ve come back in nine games this season. I thought it was a fitting end to a great season.”
The Flash hadn’t reached a title game since 2013 after winning league titles in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
“I think towards the end of the game the minutes were winding down and we knew we had to get a goal and I think doubt might have been setting in,” said Williams. “Just to be able to get that equalizer and then go into PKs something we’ve been practicing for weeks now is pretty incredible. “
