In a battle between the best two lacrosse teams in Section Five, defense won.
Victor allowed Pittsford only one goal until the final three minutes and otherwise controlled the game start to finish in a 6-3 win at Sutherland Thurdsay night.
The Blue Devils scored the first three goals of the game during a 3:44 in the first half of the first quarter. The scored remained 3-0 at halftime.
Zach Estabrooks opened the scoring 90 seconds into the second half to make it 4-0 Victor.
John Mozrall finally got Pittsford on the board 29 seconds later, but Estabrooks restored the four goal lead midway through the third.
The next goal by either side did not come until inside five minutes to play in the game. It was Estabrooks again, who finished with four goals (everyone else on the field totaled five goals!)
There were only 23 shots on goal combined in the game. Chayse Ierlan made seven saves to backstop a stifling Victor D. Longpole Tanner Hay even had two assists to make it a stellar night for defenders.
Victor rebounded from its first loss of the year and improved to 7-1.
It was Pittsford’s first loss of the season. The Panthers are 8-1.
Unlike last season, Victor and Pittsford can not meet again in sectionals. Victor dropped down to Class B for 2017. Pittsford is still in Class A.
So, the Blue Devils will hold bragging rights for this season.
