State champs Irondequoit shift focus to Federation tourney

The Irondequoit boys basketball team already etched it’s name in the history books by winning a state championship last weekend, but the Eagles aren’t quite done with their 2016-17 season yet.

This weekend is the Federation Tournament of Champions in Glens Falls that features the champs from New York’s public schools both outside and inside New York City along with champs from the state’s Catholic and Independent School leagues.

On Saturday, Irondequoit faces Independent School winners Albany Academy in the Class A semifinals. The Cadets are the defending Federation champions after topping 2016’s NYSPHSAA champ Elmont.

The Eagles admit it feels weird to be back practicing after winning a state title, but are determined to grab one last trophy.

“We’ve said a lot of ‘Thank You’s’ to everyone that has congratulated us but we keep telling them that we have one more tournament to win,” said Irondequoit’s senior guard Zach Stenglein before practice on Wednesday. “Coach asked if we wanted to take this week seriously or just have fun with it and we obviously told him seriously because we’re here to win basketball games.”

Albany Academy boasts one of the best rosters in New York, highlighted by Gatorade NY State Player of the Year Hameir Wright.

“I know they’re a good team, they are the #2 team in the state, they got the Gatorade Player of the Year, they got a few really top ranked guys in New York State, but we are the #1 team in the state,” said Eagles senior forward Alex Goldsberry. “If we play how we’re supposed to play, we’ll prove it.”
