The RIT women’s basketball team is in a brand new place.
The NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers landed their first tournament berth in program history after winning the LIberty League conference title last weekend.
RIT is one of five Monroe County schools with teams in the Division III Big Dance (U of R men and women, Fisher men and Geneseo women). It’s the first time that’s happened since 1998.
It’s a program that isn’t yet used to winning. The Tigers have been over .500 only seven of the previous nine seasons.
Now, RIT is one victory away from back-to-back 20 win seasons. It’s a brand new foundation for Tiger basketball.
“It’s just a good group of girls that came in all at once,” said sophomore guard Cori Okada. “We’re really close with each other and I think that shows on the court, too.”
“It was actually a big transition going from my high school career because in all of my high school career, I lost like six games,” Junior Guard Jessica Glaz said. “I definitely knew what it took to win. Coming here and not making playoffs our first year, I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t really satisfied.”
RIT opens their tournament Friday night at 7pm at Ithaca.
