Less than a week after knocking out the defending state champs, Pittsford was in command once again, this time beating the #1 seed in Class A.
The Knights opened the scoring with a Charlie Merkley goal less than three minutes in, but the Panthers then scored the next four goals.
Ronin VanDamme scored a pair, while Shawn Alexander and Danny Judge registered the other tallies for Pittsford.
Zach Lee scored McQuaid’s second goal with 13.7 seconds remaining in the game.
Pittsford’s starting goalie Alex Tidd suffered a leg injury during the first period, but returned to the game for the second and third periods. Backup goalie Ryan Zaucha stopped every shot he faced. Combined, the two made 24 stops on 26 shots.
Pittsford opened the Class A playoffs with an 11-1 win over Geneva, before a 3-2 win over last year’s Class A state champs Victor last Saturday.
(2)Fairport 7, (3)Penfield 3
The Red Raiders scored in the opening minute of the game and never looked back, punching their ticket to the Class A championship.
Cory Foster scored 41 seconds in, moments after Hunter McDonald leveled a big hit in Penfield’s zone to force a turnover.
Fairport doubled the lead less than ten minutes later via a Nick LaMendola shot from distance for a power play goal.
The Red Raiders scored again in the opening period while on a 5-minute power play. While stationed in front of the net, Caleb Kaiser redirected a pass from Nick Krug to make it 3-0 Fairport heading into the opening intermission.
Penfield’s Matt Rockhill and Nathan Sobko bookended goals around a strike from Fairport’s Colin Herrington to make it 4-2 Fairport after two periods.
McDonald and Foster scored in the third period to give Fairport a 6-2 lead. Sean Smith made it a 3-goal game before an empty-netter from Mitchell Zanon in the dying minutes.
Pittsford and Fairport will meet in the Class A Final on Monday, February 25th at 8:00pm from RIT’s Gene Polisseni Center.
