Penn Yan may have been in a hole, but once the Mustangs started climbing, they were unstoppable, overcoming a 4-goal deficit to beat Chenango Forks (Section IV) 10-7 in the Class D semifinal on Wednesday at St. John Fisher College.
The Mustangs trailed 5-1 and 6-2 in the second quarter, only to roar back. Austin Blumbergs scored with one second left of the first half to make it 6-4 Chenango Forks.
After halftime, Penn Yan looked nearly unstoppable, scoring six of the next seven goals.
Blumbergs finished with four goals for Penn Yan. Conner Fingar added three goals of his own, while Conner Fingar and Dylan Stape each scored twice and Colton Smith accounted for the other tally.
Penn Yan will next face Pleasantville (Section I) in the Class D state final at 10:00am on Saturday, June 9th at St. John Fisher College. Penn Yan is in a state final for the fifth time. The Mustangs won the title in 2001 in Class C and lost the C final in 2004, 2012, and 2016.
