Arguably the best amateur player women’s golf history is coming to Rochester next month.
Leona and Lisa McGuire will play the Danielle Downey Classic, and both were at Brook-Lea Country Club for the announcement of sponsor invites on Thursday.
Leona was ranked the number one amateur in the world for 135 weeks, the most all time. She’s had to turn down over $100,000 in golf winnings to remain an amateur. Both sisters will turn pro this week at the LPGA’s Shop Rite Classic.
“It would have been nice to take those checks, but I guess going to Duke and getting a world class education was also worth a lot of money, too, and some things money can’t buy,” said Leona. “Hopefully, in my professional career, I’ll make up for that and won’t have to turn away any more checks.”
While Leona has Symetra Tour status, Lisa does not. She will be able to play on a sponsor invite.
“Life on Tour can get a little lonely sometimes, especially when you’re out there by yourself,” said Lisa. “Coming from college, having a team around you all the time, it’s nice that we’ve kinda built our own team starting this new journey. It’s definitely good that we can share that together and ease that a little bit.”
The 2018 Danielle Downey Classic will take place July 16-22 at Brook-Lea Country Club in Gates.
