The Bills are taking Wednesday off from training camp, so there are no sessions at St. John Fisher.
The Bills are already a quarter of the way through camp, and a new face is becoming a big hit with the fans – and the love is definitely felt right back.
James Wilder, Jr. signing autographs is unlike any athlete you’ve ever seen. You can’t help but walk away smiling.
“I definitely enjoy it. I enjoy it probably more than they enjoy it. It’s always good to give back. They’re out here watching us,” Wilder said. “You hear people saying they’re driving from Michigan, driving from Canada. It’s crazy, man. A little hour, hour and a half after practice, man, it doesn’t bother me.”
The running back is a longshot to make the Bills and has used up his practice squad eligibility. Either he’s on the 53 man roster, or he’s out of pro football.
“I know it’s all or nothing. It’s either go home or make the team better, I know what I have to do,” he said. “I know what I want to do.”
For father’s day this year, NFL Network sent the Wilder family all the video they had of James Wilder, Sr. who was an accomplished running back himself.
Wilder, Jr. grew up always being the son of someone else, but could not be prouder.
“I’m never going to be mentioned without him being mentioned, but that’s an honor. That is something I have to live up to. I’ve been given my whole life, it’s something I’m used to,” he said. “To be able to have somebody to learn from somebody who played in the league for ten-plus years not a lot of people get that.”
Wilder said he heard about Bills fans before joining the team, and has been blown away by their support on social media and in person.
“Since college I haven’t seen anything like this,” said Wilder. “Little things like this, giving back to them, they definitely deserve it. I definitely want to do the most I can.”
