Brighton wins double OT thriller

Nathan Martin hit a tying three pointer with ten seconds left in overtime and Brighton won a defensive struggle in the second OT to advance past Franklin in a Class A1 First Round game Wednesday night on Norton Street. 

The Barons controlled the second half and had the lead into double digits at one point. However, Franklin whittled the lead down to three and Devonte Goins tied the game on a long three with 23 seconds to play in regulation. 

Brighton won the second overtime 6-3, but had to survive a 35-foot heave that squarely hit back rim at the buzzer.

The Barons improved to 5-16 and advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal game against (2)Greece Athena. Tip time at Athena is 4pm.  

Franklin finished the season 9-12. 

(8)Aquinas 69, (9)Spencerport 46

Myles Blackwood led the Irish with 21 points as Aquinas cruised past Spencerport in a Class A1 First Round game Wednesday night on Dewey Avenue. 

Blackwood almost single handedly broke open a tie game in the first quarter. Aquinas went on a 15-0 run to take a 23-8 lead with Blackwood accounting for 11 of those points. 

Nick Thibeau led Spencerport with 12 points. The Rangers finished their season 5-16. 

Aquinas is now 7-12 and they will next face top seeded Pittsford Mendon in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The unbeaten Vikings will host a 6pm tip against the Irish. 

(8) Leadership 66, (9)Honeoye Falls-Lima 52

Leadership built a 17 point lead in the second quarter and won a comfortable Class A2 First Round game against Honeoye Falls-Lima in Charlotte Wednesday. 

The Lions are now 12-9 and will face top seeded East in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Tip time is 7pm at East High. 

HF-L finishes their season at 9-12. 

(9)World of Inquiry 71, (8)Rochester Prep 63

Jahlil Bell led the Griffins with 23 points as World of Inquiry held off a game Rochester Prep squad in a Class B2 First Round game on Scio Street Wednesday afternoon. 

World of Inquiry led the entire fourth quarter, but could never shake the Lions. The Griffins prevented a serious late threat from Prep by seeming to corral every important rebound late. 

Romel Brown added 15 points for WOI while Bobby Searight and Tremier Dollar each scored ten. 

Wesley Henderson hit six three’s and led all scorers with 24 points for Rochester Prep. Bruce Lewis also had a 20-point game. 

World of Inquiry ups their record to 7-14 and advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Griffins will face top seeded Wellsville at the southern tip of Section Five for a 2pm tip. 

Rochester Prep finished the season at 8-13.
