Every NFL draft has quarterback prospects that are pegged to be the centerpiece of a team’s franchise. This year, the Bills are likely going to be in play to select the next great signal-caller.

Buffalo head into the NFL draft with eight draft picks, including two in the first round. What the picks turn into is the million dollar question. They could package the picks to move up in the first round or stay put at picks 12 and 22.

Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander says that a team’s success comes down to the quarterback position.

“This is a quarterback driven league,” he said, “Whether that quarterback is on our roster or somebody that we decide we want to move up and get, that’s something that you always, as an organization, want to be able to build around.”

Buffalo has the possibility to build around quarterback AJ McCarron. The Bills signed the former fifth round pick to a two year deal in March, but he is focusing on what it takes to be the best quarterback he can be.

“I can’t worry about that (Bills selecting a quarterback) because it creates mental clutter for myself. If I create mental clutter for myself, I can’t become the best player, the best teammate that I need to be for this team,” McCarron said.

The Bills are also in the market for offensive lineman after losing three this offseason. Alexander recalls the career of David Carr who was selected number one overall by the Houston Texans, and ultimately, didn’t succeed because a lack of protection.

“Obviously, losing guys like (Eric) Wood, Cordy Glenn to a trade and now Richie (Incognito) to retirement, you want to have a solid offensive line. You could have an all-pro quarterback back there, but if you can’t keep him upright, it really doesn’t matter.”

The NFL draft begins April 26.
