Normally, all NFL coaching changes take place in January during the first few weeks following the season.
The Bills waited untin mid-March to make a change.
Rex Ryan fired defensive line coach Karl Dunbar on Sunday. Dunbar came with Rex to Buffalo from the Jets where he ran the D-Line for the final three seasons of Ryan’s tenure.
Dunbar also played for Ryan one season in 1994 when Rex was coaching the Arizona Cardinals defensive line.
In a statement, Ryan said, “This was a difficult decision as Karl both played for me and then coached on my staff with two different teams and I have a great deal of respect for him. But I feel we needed to make a change and go in a different direction at this point in time and so I have informed Karl that I am relieving him of his duties.”
