Ellie Mooney’s last second steal and Lexi Green’s overtime domination helped Mendon pull off a dramatic comeback 68-62 win in Penfield Tuesday night.
Mendon trailed by two with less than ten seconds to play when Mooney stole an inbounds pass right under the Penfield basket. She spun in a layup that required a ton of english to even the score at 56.
The Patriots could not get a shot off before the regulation buzzer.
Green scored the first six points of overtime to put Mendon in front 62-56 and the Vikings never looked back.
Penfield did close to within three with 23 seconds to play, but Alana Fursman put the game away with a layup off a Courtney Naugle feed.
The Patriots were in control with an 11 point lead midway through the third, but a 10-0 Mendon run tightened the game up.
The Vikings got even twice early in the fourth quarter, but Makaila Wilson hit a 15-footer and then Brianne Moxley forced a steal at midcourt. She converted the turnover into a three point play and five point Penfield lead.
Mendon seemed dead down six in the final minute, but Mooney nailed a three from the lettering on the court to cut the Patriot lead in half.
Penfield made one of two at the line during their next trip and were in front 56-52. Fursman drew a foul and made two, as it turned out, very clutch free throws to set the final sequence in motion.
Green finished with a team high 21 points for Mendon. Wilson led all scorers with 29 points to pace the Patriots.
Mendon remains perfect on the young season at 3-0. Penfield fell to 2-1.
