Mercy stormed out to en early lead and never looked back in its Class A state qualifier against Sutherland, winning 11-0 on Thursday at Wayne High School.
Sophomore Lauren Gulick belted a 2-run double to right field in the first inning. The Mercy first baseman finished with three hits and three RBI for the Monarchs.
That was plenty for Mercy pitcher Riley Maher who not only drove in a pair of runs, the sophomore also threw a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts.
Mercy will next face Iroquois of Section VI in the Class A state quarterfinals at 1:30pm on Saturday, June 2nd at Williamsville East High School.
