“I come in here everyday like my job is getting ready to get taken away from me.”
That’s not something you expect to hear from a former 1st round draft pick who is still just 23 years old, but that is Shaq Lawson’s new mindset. Lawson was one of the last Bills players off the field at OTA’s on Thursday.
Lawson was the subject of trade talk this offseason and he’s used those rumors as a source of motivation.
“Alright, it’s the third year. I’m a former 1st round pick. It’s time for me to show why I got drafted in the first round,” Lawson said. “It’s time to do my job and not let these Bills fans down and the coaches down.”
Lawson has severely underperformed his 1st round draft status. In two seasons, he’s got just 6 sacks and 24 tackles. He’s struggled with injuries, missing 11 of 32 games.
“Since I got cleared with the ankle injury, I’m doing everything right. I took care of my body, I’m eating right and doing everything a pro does to be successful.
“There’s just something different about me this year. I’m doing everything in my power, every day to get my body worked on. Staying extra. Getting extra help. Staying extra on the field. Just doing extra stuff to just get a little edge.”
