Bills embrace underdog role… again

NFL Buffalo

Jerry Hughes was not surprised when he heard the national media is overlooking his team.

“We understand that’s typical of what the national media would do,” says Hughes. “They just don’t have too much belief in the Buffalo Bills.”

Even a nine win season and playoff berth could not silence the skeptics.

“We weren’t supposed to do it last year,” smiled Micah Hyde. “I think going into this season a lot of people were predicting us to win four games.

Shrugging his shoulders he added, “It is what it is.”

“That’s what the national media does. They doubt us and put us on the back burner,” continued Hughes.

“We’re not going to listen to that,” smirked Hyde. “We know the type of football team we have and we also know the type of motivator and leader we have in Sean McDermott.”

“From top to bottom of our roster, there’s not a lot of household names and I think our guys embrace that,” said Sean McDermott.

“We believe in them, and it’s not up to me who else believes in them but I know we believe in every single man on this roster,” added the Bills head coach.

Hyde said he loves the doubters and that he doesn’t get annoyed constantly being the underdog.

‘But it is disrespectful,” grinned Hyde.

While the team does their best to block out the noise, they would be lying if they said they did not hear it.

“I’ve got Twitter. I’ve got Instagram. People are always tagging me in pictures about who are the top five safeties and they don’t have me and [Jordan] Poyer in the conversation,” said Hyde.

“We understand what’s going on. It’s funny to us,” joked Hyde. “It gives us a motivation. A chip on our shoulder.”

When asked about the national media at the beginning of camp Sean McDermott said, “this is the time of year of projections.”

“That’s the media’s job, we’re just focused on practice,” he added with a smile.
