The Bills new group of wide receivers didn’t jump off the box score on Sunday against the Jets. None of the Bills wideouts caught more than two passes.
Nine of Tyrod Taylor’s 16 completions went to running back LeSean McCoy and tight end Charles Clay. The Bills quarterback says the team is capable of success while executing plays mostly for tight ends and running backs.
“They create matchups that are hard inside with linebackers and safeties for most teams,” said Taylor to the media on Wednesday. “We’re going to have to be able to take advantage when those opportunities present themselves. Last week we were confident in going out there and making plays with Charles [Clay] and Shady [McCoy.]”
Last season, Charles Clay led the Bills in receptions with 57. The last Bills TE to lead the team in receptions was Scott Chandler back in 2013 with 53.
“We come out and put the work in so when my number is called, I’ll be ready,” said Clay. “I know LeSean does the same thing, but I feel like we have a lot of guys in this offense that can make plays when their number is called. Its just a matter of how we matchup with any team in a given week.”
Bills rookie wide receiver Zay Jones caught the first pass of his NFL career on Sunday, but it was his only reception in Week 1. He says his numbers aren’t important especially while the Bills are winning.
“We have to be a complete offense together. Work as one unit,” said Jones. “Coach talks about being 1/11th and everyone doing their job, if everyone is doing their job, we’re going to be a successful offense.”
The Bills will face a tougher defense in Week 2, traveling to the Carolina Panthers for a 1pm game on Sunday that can be seen on CBS and WROC-TV.
