Texas woman dies from crash after being asked to run across road in heels

An Austin woman was struck by a vehicle and killed after running into the road after she was asked how fast she could run in high heels.

Austin police said a woman was struck by a vehicle on the southbound Interstate 35 frontage road approaching Seventh Street in downtown August 18 around 2:30 a.m.

The victim, 18-year-old Deemora Benson, was asked how fast she could run in high heels, according to police. She proceeded to run into the road and was hit by a vehicle. 

The driver of the car, a maroon GMC Yukon, left the scene after hitting Benson, but returned a short time later.

Benson was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center but died of her injuries two weeks later on Sunday, September 2.

The driver, 21-year-old Felipe Hernandez,  was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid.

Hernandez remains in the Travis County Jail on a $4,000 bond.
