RIDGEWAY, N.Y. (WIVB & WROC) — The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office says a husband and wife are dead in the Town of Ridgeway. Deputies were dispatched at 6:40 a.m. Thursday.
According to authorities, their son came home from work at 6:30 a.m. and tried to check on 56-year-old Shari Payne and 60-year-old James Payne at 3153 North Gravel Road.
The son says the door was locked, and he looked through the window to see his mother, Shari, on the floor, the sheriff’s office told News 4 in Buffalo.
He broke into the house and found both his mother and father were shot. Authorities told News 4 he also found his mom was stabbed.
A neighbor told News 8 in Rochester this is a shared house, so there was more than just the couple living here. News 8 spoke with a number of others off-camera who said the Payne’s were decent community-involved people and had recently moved to this home.
Residents at a gas station just down the road were still trying to process their deaths.
“For such a small town to have something happen like this…I hope it’s not related to the stress of the pandemic, or stress of anything else going on, but you never know with this kind of thing,” says Joseph Burger.
“It’s sad because Ridgeway never really has nothing…it’s just a nice, quiet community down here,” says Judd Fairwell.
“No, nothing like this. You get your regular ‘ruffians’ or whatever. Normal stuff. Nothing like this,” says Michael Humphrey.
“If is not like a murder/suicide kind of thing, if it’s a double homicide and that person’s out there, I mean everyone family is at risk,” adds Burger.
The Orleans County Sheriff’s Office says both bodies will go to the Monroe County Medical Examiner. The New York State Police are assisting.
