ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Police Department is investigating the death of a newborn child.
About 9 p.m. on Thursday, the RPD responded to Rochester General Hospital for the report of a baby that was brought into the hospital deceased.
The recently born baby boy was determined to have died as a result of unknown circumstance.
RPD’s Major Crimes Unit is currently investigating this incident. According to RPD, an autopsy will be performed in the next couple days to help determine a cause of death.
News 8 talked to local grief counselor Stacy Steinmiller about how an event like this could impact first responders.
“I think especially with this event the innocence of a newborn baby can bring up a lot of emotions from people of grief and angry as well,” said Steinmiller. “There are EAP programs, employee assisted programs, that first responders and other staff members can reach out to.”
Steinmiller urges those who are are experiencing a traumatic event to acknowledge their feelings and not be afraid to ask for help.
“One thing that I recommend to my clients that often struggle with all these terrible things that we hear in the news is to be compassionate towards our feelings that it’s very human to feel sad or even angry when listening to a story like this,” said Steinmiller.
