AURORA, M.O. (KOZL)– A detective at the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says deputies have made an arrest in a 31-year-old murder cold case.
Only a few details have come in, but here’s what we know:
The murder suspect’s name is Larry Timmons. The News Leader originally reported, Timmons was questioned in a case in Monroe county in 2009. That report said he was accused of leaving notes on the cars of two women. In the notes he solicited them to meet him.
The Sheriff’s office did not have enough evidence a crime had been committed in that case. The leader also reported Timmons lived in the Rochester New York area in the early 2000s.
Timmons is in his mid-60s and has been in jail since August 19 on forgery charges. His bond is set at a $250,000.
His arrest is somehow connected to the death of Cynthia Smith from Aurora, Missouri.
Smith’s body was found in 1988 near Pierce City.
She was 31 at the time of her death and was discovered missing after failing to pick up her children from a babysitter.
An old News-Leader article in August of that year said investigators interviewed family and friends about her disappearance.
A possible suspect was given a polygraph test, but no one was ever arrested.
No other details were released tonight.
This is a developing story and will be updated when further details become available. News 8 has reached out to the Monroe County sheriff’s office for more details.
