Jordan Health will host its third annual Front Porch Festival offering free health screenings this Saturday, August 4 from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Baden Park in Rochester.
Mia Hodgins, the Director of the Jordan Health Foundation, and Greer Gladney, a member of the Jordan family and Administrative Assistant at the Health Center, discussed the free event Tuesday during News 8 at Sunrise.
“It’s an event free and open to the public,” said Hodgins. “There will be lots of great events for the family. There’s free food and beverages, lots of activities like dancing, a rock wall and a petting zoo. We’re also focusing on health screens for the family.”
She added, “They’ll be able to both have medical screenings, but also other community organizations will be able to help them connect with services and opportunities for families.”
The name of the event – the Front Porch Festival – traces back to Gladney’s grandfather Anthony Jordan, who helped found Jordan Health. “My grandfather came to Rochester in 1932, and he was one of the first two black doctors in Rochester,” she said. “He would see patients, both in private practice — but for patients who were of lower-income or didn’t have the ability to pay — everybody was seen on the porch. That’s where everybody gathered, and that was basically his waiting room.”
Gladney added, “Everything in Jordan Health’s mission is about helping the entire community, regardless of ability to pay. That’s what he and Kenneth Woodward, who is our other founder, were all about. The Front Porch Festival very-much speaks to that and to continuing their dedication to the Rochester community.”
This is a big year for Jordan Health. The organization is celebrating 50 years as a federally qualified health center. A gala to mark the occasion will be held in September. “Our gala will be happening on Saturday, September 15, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center,” Hodgins said. “We’re going to have dinner and celebrate all things Jordan Health. We’re really excited to announce that our musical entertainment for the evening is ‘The Temptations.’ We’re looking forward to celebrating the ‘Jordan journey,’ yesterday, today and tomorrow. Tickets are $150 and can purchased at jordanhealthfoundation.org.”
