The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office lost a patrol boat on Friday, after the Boston Whaler was consumed by fire Friday night in Sodus Point.

The area surrounding Sodus Bay is popular on a Friday night. So, a lot of people watched as the boats smoked and caught fire.

“We were coming down the hill and saw black smoke and knew black smoke wasn’t good,” said Kristina Mossgraber.

Kristina was on her way to dinner in Sodus Point when she saw two boats on fire.

“You could hear explosions and poppings on the boats,” she said. “Just devastating to watch.”

The Sheriff’s Office said a fellow boater was performing fuel system maintenance on his boat when it caught fire, spreading to a patrol boat docked nearby at Krenzer Marine. Both boats were completely destroyed in the fire, as was a dock owned by Krenzer Marine.

Assistant Chief Mark Jones with the Sodus Point Volunteer Fire Department, says, luckily, no one was on board either boat.

“As of right now, all the boats in the way, they moved,” said Jones. “Unfortunately, part of the dock has been burned up at the slip it was staying at.”

Neighbors and crews in Sodus Point say this is especially devastating with all of the flooding they have had in the past few weeks.
