A Wayne County Sergeant has been awarded with the Life Saving Award after helping to save the life of a fellow law enforcement officer.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, on November 26, 2013, Rochester Police Sergeant Ralph J. Gagliano was driving home after completing his shift at the Rochester Police Department. Sergeant Gagliano, who lives in Wayne County, stopped at the Top’s Grocery Store in Ontario to pick up some items for an upcoming Rochester Police Department event.

While at Top’s Grocery, Sergeant Gagliano experienced a severe headache causing him to immediately leave the store to travel home to rest. While traveling home, Sergeant Gagliano had a motor vehicle incident driving off the roadway. Sergeant Ayotte was the responding officer, who quickly assessed the scene and in interviewing Gagliano realized a medical emergency was occurring. Gagliano was transported to a Rochester Hospital where emergency surgery for a brain aneurysm was performed.

Deputies say Sergeant Gagliano has no recollection of the driving mishap, the transport to the hospital, his surgery or the next 21 days until he became conscious.

Sergeant Gagliano recently retired from the Rochester Police Department on March 2, 2018 and wanted to present the award to Sergeant Ayotte at his retirement, but because of a scheduling conflict Sergeant Ayotte was unable to attend.

On March 21st, Sergeant Gagliano came to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office presenting Sergeant Ayotte with the Life Saving Award.
