Local News

A mother’s courage was not enough to save her life or her children Felicia Dees a longtime friend says “we all had kids and we use to all say that if anything happen we would die for our kids. And for her to go back and try to rescue her kids I am very proud to say that I was a friend of Virginia Ortiz.

Family and friends filled Holy Cross Catholic Church in Charlotte to say their final good byes to Virginia Ortiz and her two beloved children Willie Nelson Junior and Ameeya Nelson.  Ortiz’s younger sister Jessica Meehan- Ortiz, gave her a proper sendoff that made room for laughter followed by a plea for justice. “I wanna know so badly why someone wanted to take three innocent beautiful lives away.”

Fire officials were called to 99 High Street to tend to a home that caught fire. Friends tell us Ortiz heroically went back into the burning house to save her son Willie. Both mother and son passed away soon after they were taken to the hospital. Ameeya died a couple days after.

Police have considered this case to be arson. A memorial sits in the driveway to remind us of the family that loss their lives that early morning. Deina Chavez and Felicia Dees longtime friends of Ortiz, pleads with the community to help catch the person responsible for the lives of this family. “If anybody knows anything to please come forward at least for closure.”
