Upgrades finally coming for Blue Cross Arena

Local News

We’re learning more about plans to renovate the Blue Cross Arena.

The state secured $3.5 million for repairs two years ago and now we know how they plan to spend the money.

Fans tell News 8 that they love the Amerks, but the facilities could be improved. “The bathrooms definitely could use some updating,” says Stephen Parisi Jr., Amerks fan.

“I think they need to improve the bathrooms… I think the concourse there is plenty of space there they could do more with that when you enter,” adds Bryan Cross, Amerks fan. “If it means keeping the teams here, I think there should be some renovations done and keeping the teams here is what’s most important.”

After about two decades without any renovations, they could be getting their wish. $3.5 million in state funding is going towards improving those infamous bathrooms, as well as the audio and visual systems in the arena.

The $3.5 million is just about 10 percent of what the city says they’d like to see invested over time. A study they conducted looking into it suggested $38 million.

“I think that not all that money would be necessary,” explains Parisi. “It could be given to other things in the community.”

The idea the city says is to make sure Blue Cross Arena stays relevant and enjoyable for fans. “If you see what happened to the other teams what happened to the Red Wings that’s always possible,”  says Bryan Cross.

As for what other improvements blue cross would like to see for the arena… Jeff Calkins, Blue Cross Arena GM, tells us: “I think the weak part of the facility is the north end of the building. There is no concession areas or bars or lounges anything to enhance people as they come in.”
