One person is dead after a house fire broke out just before 2 a.m. in Hamlin on Thursday. Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies say two residents were asleep in the house located on Walker Lake Ontario Road when the fire started.
According to deputies one of the individuals woke up to smoke and popping sounds coming from within the house. That individual then fled and went nextdoor to a family member’s house for help.
Deputies say that family member called 911.
Firefighters located the second person inside the house, once they were able to get inside. The Sheriff’s Office and Hamlin Fire Department are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office to ID the body.
The house is a total loss, and excavators are on scene working to tear down what remains.
The cause of the fire is not yet determined.
