UPDATE (MONDAY, MAY 15):
The Rochester Fire Department says Friday night’s fire on Jay Street was caused by “juvenile fire play.”
ORIGINAL (FRIDAY, MAY 12):
Two firefighters were injured while fighting a two alarm house fire on Jay Street Friday night.
When crews first arrived on scene, the home was engulfed in flames and the fire was impinging on the house next door.
Fire crews were able to make it to the second floor of the house before parts of the attic began to collapse. Crews had to retreat and fight the fire from outside.
According to first responders, there were four adults and one child home in the lower apartment of the two-family home. All five people were able to make it out of the building uninjured, as well as the adult living in the upper apartment.
Two firefighters, however, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The home that the fire broke out in will have to be demolished. The Red Cross is helping the occupants with a place to stay.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
