TYKEs Theatre will open up its fifteenth season with plenty of laughs for kids in the new show “Diary of a Worm, a Spider & a Fly” at the JCC Hart Theater in Brighton November 10-18.
TYKEs founder Freyda Schneider discussed the season opening show Tuesday during News 8 at Noon.
“It’s a New York Times best selling series by Doreen Cronin,” said Schneider. “These three books, “Diary of a Worm,” “Dairy of a Fly” and “Diary of a Spider,” all combine into one — it’s a mash-up! It’s a story mash-up, and it’s a musical, combined into one absolutely hilarious show!”
The story features, of course, a worm, spider and fly, but that’s not all. “There’s other insects too,” Schneider said. “I don’t want to leave anybody out. There’s a bee, a butterfly and an ant as well. These insects, which are very sort of ‘reminiscent’ of young children, go back to school for a new school year at ‘Bug Elementary School.’ The show is just from beginning to end, an absolute comedy. I’ve probably read the script 50 times, and seen rehearsal after rehearsal. I went to dress rehearsal last night, and I never stopped laughing! You know, sometimes I feel like the universe all collides together with the stars, the moon and sun aligning perfectly, and this show just aligns perfectly.”
Schneider added, “It’s so colorful. It’s just the costumes, the sets and our props are just so masterfully made by our designers… and the music! There’s all different styles of music. It just– it works so well to be energetic, lively and really stimulating without being really, you know, ‘too much’ and over-the-top. I’m so proud of it!”
Schneider pointed out the production features all local talent. “Every person is local, from the actors, designers, costumers; all people backstage are all local. It’s just from beginning to end, an amazing production, and I’m so happy it’s launching our fifteenth season at TYKEs.”
