Two people were found dead in a Batavia cemetery after being struck by lightning.
At around 3:30 p.m. on August 10, Batavia Police responded to the Batavia Cemetery and found the bodies of Richard Garlock, 34, and Jenea Macleod, 32.
Police say both individuals had injuries consistent with being struck by lightning. With assistance from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, police determined that during the storm that occurred early that morning, a lightning strike occurred in the area where the bodies were found.
Police say there isn’t any indication yet that this was anything more than an accident.
“It seems they had just gone to a back part of the cemetery and were just hanging out there,” said detective sergeant Todd Crossett.
The Erie County Medical Examiner also determined that both individuals had been struck by lightning. The cause of death is still pending further testing.
