Farmington based TOPTICA Photonics recently captured an award called the Oscar of its industry.
TOPTICA President Mark Tolbert discussed the award and what’s fueling the company’s success Wednesday during our Greater Rochester Enterprise Why ROC conversation on News 8 at Sunrise.
“We’re a laser manufacturer,” said Tolbert. “We do everything from R&D to application development to sales, service, and support of some really demanding applications. So when we think of lasers and their accuracy, we think of 10 to 12 points to the right of the decimal point. So high precision, high accuracy. And the applications, one of the most demanding applications that we’re focused on right now is Quantum Technology. That’s where we’ve done the majority of our business for the past two decades.”
Tolbert said Quantum Technology has been an industry buzz word for the past couple of years. “It’s related to quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing, which these are applications that take the computer, or it’s much like the electric circuitry of 20 years ago to 40 years ago, and evolving that into technology today.”
Recently TOPTICA was recognized with a Prism Award at Photonics West, a gathering of industry leaders. “It’s pretty exciting, Tolbert said. “It’s a group of industry experts that take a look at over a hundred different products and then in the end they select two. It’s like our Oscars. So it’s industry recognition by our peers and by other parts of our industry that say – hey, that’s, that’s a really great thing that you’ve done. So we’re pretty excited about that.”
Tolbert said the Prism Award recognized the work behind TOPTICA’s TOPO laser system, which covers everything from just under two microns straight through four microns.
When it comes to leveraging Rochester’s assets for Photonics, optics and imaging, Tolbert said being based in Farmington is perfect for TOPTICA. “The short answer, and this sounds a little bit strange, but New York is an easy place to do business. And then Rochester really is. So when you look at the universities that are here, the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, even MCC and others, the talent that’s here is fansastic. If you look at the work force that came out of old industry, whether it’s Xerox, Kodak, Bausch+Lomb, and the industries that were here before, that’s a great, talented work force that we’ve been able to pull from. Then you combine the ease of living in Rochester, great schools, lower cost of living, and just the ease of being here, Rochester is a great choice for us.”
