Gilda’s Club Rochester will host its annual Crosscheck Cancer fundraiser this Sunday, March 25 at the Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex.
News 8’s Stacey Pensgen will be among those lacing up their skates for a great cause. She joined Johanna Lester, the Director of Events and Communications for Gilda’s Club Rochester, Thursday during News 8 at Noon to discuss the fun day.
“It’s so much fun because it’s for a good cause, obviously,” said Pensgen. “It’s such an important cause. You get so many different players from different walks of life; lots of experience and no experience, and that’s what makes it so much fun. It doesn’t matter who wins or loses, although I’ve been on the losing team, like, the last two years, so I don’t know what that says.”
Former Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans hockey players will team with local TV and radio personalities and supporters of Gilda’s Club a game of hockey, but there will be more to the event as well. “It’s such a family-friendly event for us,” said Lester. “Bring the kids, bring your neighbors and bring your co-workers. We have really fun raffles and giveaways, and this year we’re having a kids mini-game during the second break as well. Kids who are ice skaters, or just learning hockey, can kind of take the ice for a brief period as well.”
All of the proceeds from Crosscheck Cancer will stay local to support families battling a cancer diagnosis. “All of our programing is free,” Lester noted. “It’s cancer support for men, women, teens or kids with any type of cancer, with their families and the friends. This family-friendly event really supports our mission because it’s for everybody!”
This is the fifth year for Crosscheck Cancer. The game begins at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex. For tickets and more information, click here.
