The Greater Rochester Challenger Learning Center is forced to relocate

Local News

This will be The Greater Rochester Challenger Learning Center’s last year at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

Rochester Museum & Science Center is renovating its Strasenburgh Planetarium but when the Planetarium reopens they have opted not to renew the Challenger Center’s lease at the end of the 2018-2019 school year, in June 2019.

The program has been at the Planetarium for the last 22 years.

The Interactive program engages over 10,000 students from over 17 districts locally including the Holley Central School District. Crystal Elliott at teacher at Holley Elementary School says both she and her fifth grade students look forward to the field trip every year.

“The kids leave invigorated about science, they do such a great job just getting the kids excited about science, learning and teamwork,” said Elliott.

They have already started the search for a new space to house the facility.  Steve Orcutt with the Challenger Center says the community has reached out in support.

The bigger challenge will be the costs of relocating. We’re told it can be more than $40,000.
