Teachers push for new playground at Nazareth Elementary

Local News

Nazareth Elementary just went through some major renovations after moving to the former location of Sacred Heart Elementary School.

Joanne Resch is retired now, but taught at the school for 20 years. She says everything at the new school is clean and neat after renovations, but that the outside is a different story.

“When I saw the playground, my heart was sad,” she said.

Renovations never included fixing the playground, which is decades old, and unsafe for kids. In July, it failed a state inspection, mainly because the wood is treated with arsenic.

The playground, used by thousands, now sits idol next to the school.

President of the school Sister Margaret Mancuso said that there is no green space for the children, something that is essential to learning. “The only option is the parking lot but it’s full of cars,” said Mancuso.

The only option for a new playground is the parking lot, which is full of cars. So, now they’re looking to the community for help through a GoFundMe campaign, along with other fundraising.

Their goal is to get something up and running before winter.

You can donate by mailing a check making it out to Nazareth Elementary, 311 Flower City Park Rochester NY 14615. Just add playground in the memo.
