SWEDEN, NY (WROC) - A jury has convicted the man involved in an attack on his ex-girlfriend and a Good Samaritan who tried to intervene that lead to a standoff on Redman Road in the Town of Sweden in February.
Prosecutors said Curtis Howden, age 39, invited his ex-fiancee to his home on Redman Road on February 27. When she arrived, they say Howden destroyed her car with a sledgehammer and knife.
Deputies said Todd Pratt and Michael Holland were both driving by and stopped to try and help. But, investigators said Howden attacked Pratt and stole Holland's vehicle in an attempt to run down his fiancee.
When deputies got to the scene, Howden ran into his house, resulting in a five-hour standoff before he was arrested.
Howden was convicted on charges of assault and attempted assault. He faces between 3.5 and 15 years in prison.
