A suspect at the center of a standoff in the town of Southport is in the hospital after he was shot by police Sunday morning.

Elmira Police told WROC’s sister station,18 News, that the suspect was armed with a gun, and that he had fired shots towards police.

Police say the suspect went out into a neighborhood in Southport and tried to negotiate with him for several hours.

A portion of Allen Street from South Main Street to Cedar Street was blocked off for several hours Sunday morning as dozens of police vehicles converged on the neighborhood.  Residents in the blocked off streets and surrounding area were asked to stay inside with their doors locked.

The call came in around 6:00 a.m. for shots fired at a residence on Allen Street in Southport.  Shots were not fired inside the home.

Police say the suspect is wanted by New York State parole and currently has absconder status.  His name cannot be released at this time and his condition is unknown.

There were no other reported injuries.

Elmira PD, CCSO, WEPD and NYSP assisted patrols on the scene. The incident is still under investigation.
