A new study by BlueCross BlueShield finds child vaccination rates in Monroe County are among the highest in the nation.
The study examined data of more than 800,000 children born between 2010 and 2013. Monroe County has a vaccination rate of nearly 90-percent — which is the sixth highest rate among all the counties examined in the nation.
Thursday, we spoke with Jordan Health which helps students from the Rochester City School District get vaccinated. They told us, besides the fact it’s a requirement for school, it’s important for young children to take this step so they can fight off certain diseases.
Officials from the Rochester City School District say they’re happy to hear their initiative is working.
“It’s great news and wonderful news,” says Carlos Garcia. “This year Superintendent Dean Williams decided to make a push to make sure that all of our parents knew that kids needed to be vaccinated and we wanted to start the year out strong with having everything done ahead of time.”
Now the district does require that all students get vaccinated before enrolling in school – unless they have a letter from a doctor stating they’re unable to.
Although the numbers are high, RCSD says their goal is to continue this push so the numbers increase each year.
