Kids at Nathaniel Hawthorne School No. 25 kicked off Fire Prevention Week in style.
They had an opportunity to explore a fire truck and take part in a tour of the Rochester Fire Department safety house.
Fire fighters pointed out hazards, like putting metal in a microwave – and urged thinking about what would happen in a real life fire.
“I know when my son was little, he had a plan in place,” said Fire Marshall Christine Schryver. “He was five years old and he knew how he was going to get out of his room. I can’t stress enough – you may think, ‘Oh, I can go down the staircase, or my number one way out.’ That may not work, so what’s plan B?”
Mayor Lovely Warren and Fire Chief John Schreiber were also in attendance. Fire Prevention Week runs from October 9 to October 15.
