A State Police canine, “K9 Will,” was killed on Monday while performing his duties with his handler.

State Police were assisting the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office in executing a search warrant at a residence on Woodcreek Road in the Town of Greig.

While they were executing the warrant, a pitbull ran from the residence and began attacking 3-year-old K9 Will.

His handler, Trooper Shaun Smith, shot the pitbull in the leg. It appears that the bullet ricocheted off the gravel driveway, hitting Will.

K9 Will was named after Trooper William G. Doyle, who was shot and killed by escapees from a mental health facility on Dec. 14, 1967.

The incident is still under investigation.
