Local News

The Special Olympics torch has made it to Rochester!

Members of the law enforcement community including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Rochester Police, New York State Police, and Gates Police Department, carried the Flame of Hope from the Gates Police Department to downtown Rochester.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run raises awareness and funds for Special Olympics New York. More than $2 million was raised in New York in 2016 through the Law Enforcement Torch Run initiative.

“It’s mind-blowing,” said athlete Hannah Brown. “You get to meet and have new friends, people you can enjoy just have fun and be on a team as one.”

The Flame of Hope will continue its journey to Siena College, host of the this year’s Summer State Games, June 16-17.

It was also announced on Friday that Rochester will host the 2018 and 2019 State Winter Games.

The 2018 Winter State Games will commence on February 23. Winter State Games event venues include:

– Alpine Skiing – Swain Ski Resort

– Figure Skating and Speed Skating – Genesee Valley Sports Complex

– Nordic Skiing – Bristol Mountain

– Snowshoeing  – Cobbs Hill Park
