A Seneca Falls couple has pleaded not guilty in connection with the deadly beating of a 3-year-old.
Donald and Alison Bovio were both arraigned on Thursday on charges including murder and manslaughter.
Bail for both defendants was set at $400,000 cash or $800,000 bond.
The pair are new to Seneca Falls – but Donald Bovio has an extensive criminal history in Massachusetts.
Alison Bovio has no prior felony convictions.
The Bovios were indicted on a host of charges last week, including murder and manslaughter, after Panagiotis Stephanides-Vacchino died following the brutal assault.
Police were called to the home of Donald and Alison Bovio earlier this month for a report of a child who had fallen down stairs.
At the home, officers said the boy was not conscious and had to be rushed to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He was placed on life support and had no brain activity.
Police said the child had marks on him consistent with abuse over a period of time.
The pair were charged with:
– 3 counts of second-degree murder
– 3 counts of first-degree manslaughter
– 1 count of second-degree manslaughter
– 1 count of reckless assault of a child
– 1 count of second-degree assault
– 1 count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
– 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child
Investigators say doctors found that the 3-year-old boy’s injuries were not consistent with a fall.
They say the boy had suffered blows to his head and body. Investigators say the boy was severely beaten with a belt.
The pair could face a maximum of 25 years to life if convicted.
