A University of Rochester laser lab that faced cuts under a federal budget proposal would get funding in the proposed omnibus bill, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Thursday.
The $1.3 trillion spending bill, that would keep the federal government funded through September, has bipartisan support in Congress. President Trump has also expressed some support for the legislation.
According to Schumer and Gillibrand, the bill contains $75 million for the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics and its OMEGA Laser Facility — a budget increase for the facilities.
Officials say the lab is an economic driver, bringing hundreds of researchers to the Rochester community each year, and its work is crucial for other facilities across the nation.
Lawmakers face a Friday night shutdown deadline to pass the legislation.
