County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced on Friday her appointment of Sam DeRosa to the position of Interim Director of the Monroe County Office of Emergency Management.
DeRosa currently serves as Monroe County’s Fire Coordinator, a position he has held since 2008.
“I’m thrilled that Sam has agreed to step into this role,” said Dinolfo. “I have the utmost confidence in his ability to do the job, and County residents should feel safe knowing that he is the County’s point person during emergencies.”
Prior to becoming the County Fire Coordinator, DeRosa served the County’s Fire Bureau as Assistant County Fire Coordinator in charge of firefighter training and Executive Deputy Fire Coordinator responsible for hazardous materials and special operations.
Previously, he worked for Rochester Gas & Electric for 25 years, retiring as an Operations Manager responsible for fire protection, corporate security, claims and emergency management.
He is a life member of the Gates Fire Department where he has served as an active firefighter and past Fire Chief since 1980.
DeRosa will replace outgoing Director Fred Rion, who is accepting a position at The College at Brockport. Rion has been the director since 2013.
The OEM executes the County’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan for disaster relief before, during and after any type of natural or man-made disaster.
The Office also develops and maintains the plan to include prevention/mitigation, readiness, response and recovery. The Director of OEM oversees the Monroe County Emergency Operations Center.
The County is reviewing applicants for a permanent Director.
