ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Hundreds of local families will enjoy a better holiday this year because of the Salvation Army and the generosity of the Rochester community.
The annual Christmas assistance and toy shop event took place on Tuesday.
Local families who have pre-qualified, were able to chose toys for their children and receive a food basket filled with ingredients to prepare a holiday meal.
Donations exceeded expectations this year.
"This community is an incredibly generous community and we couldn't do it without the help of the community," said Judy Hart with the Salvation Army. "We have 1,200 [people] coming through here, so that's a lot of toys that we need and out needs have been met with toys this year."
Last year, more than 5,000 people received food baskets and 3,000 children received toys during the holiday assistance program.
