The Rochester Police Department has identified the two officers involved in a shooting that happened on Wilkins Street on Sunday night.
Police say Officer Daniel Rizzo is a 5.5 year veteran with the RPD and Officer Jeremy Lindauer is a 3 year veteran with the RPD.
Rochester police say the two Clinton Section officers were on patrol when they came across a group of people standing on Wilkins Street. Among the group, officers recognized one man who, police say, was known for “previous interactions” with the officers and was wanted on a bench warrant.
According to investigators, when the officers tried to place the man under arrest, he struggled, and both the suspect and officer went to the ground. During the struggle, police say the man had a gun that fell to the ground.
When the gun hit the ground, police say a second man in the group grabbed the gun. At that point, the officer who had been struggling with the suspect fired one shot, hitting the other man. That man ran from the scene after being hit, but was found quickly and taken to the hospital. He is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries, officers say.
The wanted man ran from the scene, officers say, and has still not been found.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
