ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) — Talk about riding in style: Rochester City School District student Fiston Heca got a lift to school on Tuesday from the Rochester Fire Department.
Heca was this year’s winner of the Prevention First drawing contest. His art teacher, Amy Graham, encourages her students to participate in the contest each year after her own experience with a house fire. She says fire safety is just as important as other studies in school.
“Fire safety is one of the most important things we should be incorporating into our studies,” said Graham. “If we do the economics, the ELA, the math, and everything else. But we also need to know studies need to be aware of everyday living. Using fire detectors and smoke detectors and how to have a fire safety plan to get out stay out.”
Prevention First is a local non-profit that focuses on fire safety and injury prevention. Specifically for children, seniors, and people with disabilities. The contest brought in over 200 entries across Monroe County.
