A new report shows Rochester’s Social Security Office has New York State’s longest wait times and the second highest in the country.
According to the report, the Rochester office received more than 5,000 calls and only 41% were answered. On Monday, Senator Chuck Schumer addressed the issue saying the low number of staff means the wait times will only increase.
“If you’re not getting your check or you’re getting less, you shouldn’t have to do cartwheels and show up at the office three or four times to get what’s due to you. You paid in and you’re entitled to get back,” said Schumer.
Schumer says he’s launching a push for $100 million in federal funding to help alleviate the long wait times and staffing issues.
