Now that the primaries are behind us, the candidates for Mayor of Rochester are gearing up for the general election.
The incumbent Mayor, Lovely Warren, won a landslide Democratic primary victory Tuesday evening, but she still faces three other challengers come November.
Those challengers: Republican Tony Micciche, a Monroe County Legislator, Green Party candidate Alex White, in his third bid for Mayor, and independent candidate Lori Thomas, a former RCSD teacher.
During her celebration Tuesday, Warren made it clear to her supporters: there’s still more work to be done.
“This election is not over tonight. We have a Republican opponent. The mayor’s race is not over tonight. We must continue fighting until November,” said Warren during her primary victory speech.
As for Micciche, he is trying to become the first Republican Mayor of Rochester in decades.
“I’m knocking on doors, I’m showing up to different functions, but mostly it’s the people. You have to reach out to them and talk to them directly,” said Micciche.
White told News 8 he was shocked at the outcome of the Democratic primary.
“If you asked me a day ago, I would have said [Warren] is going to win by a comfortable margin, but she’s not likely to get 50%. She blew that 50% number away,” said White.
He added there are many challenges running as third party candidate, noting the advantages many incumbents have in their re-election bids.
As for independent candidate Lori Thomas, she realizes it’s going to be an uphill battle against Warren and the other candidates.
“As an incumbent, [I] fully expected [Warren] would win the Democratic nomination. But again, that’s the primary…It’s not the election itself,” said Thomas.
Though it’s all part of the process.
“Just getting out and talking to the people and letting them know, that there is a choice, that the Democratic primary did not decide the mayor(ship) of Rochester,” said Thomas.
While these candidates may differ in party and policy, gaining jobs and reducing poverty is one issue every campaign will be focused on in the coming months.
