People demanding immigration reform gathered at the Liberty Pole Friday.
City councilwoman Elaine Spaull spoke to the crowd about concerns regarding children being separated from their parents at the border.
“It’s not about republican, democrat, rich or poor, black or white. This is about human beings; children,” she said.
Many marched from the Liberty Pole to the Federal Building, asking people in Rochester to demand change.
“How are we treating our immigrants here? What are we providing them?” Mahogany Florence said.
Others are taking action, too. Attorney Lauren Deutsch with the Healthy Baby Network said she and others are getting ready to head to Texas to lend a hand.
” I am working to send a group of local attorneys and translators to assist refugees in their asylum applications,” she said.
Deutsch said it’s going to be a challenge, since the laws surrounding immigration continue to change.
“This is a human rights crisis and we have to do everything we can,” she said.
